Who Doesn't Love Birthday Cake?
As a mom I love decorating special birthday cakes for my daughter each year and I loved it last year when I overheard her telling someone that her mom always makes awesome cakes! I’ll let you into a secret, except for the year when she wanted cupcakes I have always just brought a ready made plain sponge or slab cake and just decorated it as it’s really the ‘look’ of the cake that my daughter always likes.
Everyone loves different things which is why everyone’s birthday cakes can be so different and my daughter alone has had a butterfly cake, a football cake, a Hannah Montana cake, a range of cupcakes and a One Direction cake to name a few – let’s look at how to make a few of these awesome themed birthday cakes

Animal Print Birthday Cake Ideas
Animal print birthday cakes used to always make me think of a safari theme, but it's actually very popular with teens who are more into fashion than wild animals as well.
There are lots of ways in which you can incorporate a cool animal print theme into your birthday cake - the first is by using an animal print border for your cake and adding little safari animal cake toppers or figurines on top.
Another way is by using animal print by itself - the most popular one being the zebra print - you can add the birthday child's name and candles and voila - one animal print cake.
Yet another way is to decorate the cake with an animal print which just got a whole lot easier with Wilton's sugar sheets (see the zebra print one below). You could cover one layer in animal print and have another layer a solid color such as red or bright pink and then use some animal print fashion handbag toppers and animal print candles to decorate.
An alternative is to frost your cake a plain color (or use fondant) and cut out different shapes or the letters of the birthday child's name from the animal print sugar sheet and stick them onto the cake.

Ben 10 Birthday Cakes
I must admit I don't know a lot about Ben 10, but I do know that some of my daughter's friends were really into him a couple of years ago and they would've loved a Ben 10 birthday cake.
An edible cake topper is a nice and easy way to decorate a Ben 10 birthday cake which will still look really cool in the child's eye. A DecoSet cake topper however is marketed as a 'great way to upgrade your cake' and I must admit it certainly looks really cool and will have all the other children envious of your child's Ben 10 cake! A butterfly cake is always a fun birthday cake for a girl and there are a few different ways in which you can make one. You can use a butterfly cake pan or just use a round sponge cake, both of which are bound to make any little girl very happy.
Wilton Butterfly Cake Pan
This butterfly cake pan is perfect if you want to bake your own cake as your cake will already be the right shape and all you’ll have to do is decorate it.
If you prefer to buy a ready-made cake and just decorate it then I’ll let you know what I did for my daughter’s 6th birthday. I brought a round sponge and the idea was simply to cut it in half, turn the cake halves around and use a thick liquorice strap for the ‘body. I couldn’t get the thick liquorice, just some bootleg straps so I had to improvise.
I marked the halfway point and then went out a little on both sides of that before cutting which meant I had a strip of cake to use as the body and then I turned the ‘halves’ so that the cut sides were the outside wings.
I used frosting to ‘stick’ the pieces together on a cake board and then smoothed the icing all over the butterfly cake. Next I added the liquorice to the body leaving a couple of the straps longer and curling them slightly as the antennae.
To decorate the butterfly body I just used different colored smarties to make a bright and beautiful butterfly (making sure to keep the pattern the same on both sides. Not only was my daughter very happy, but the other children, her teacher and the parents all thought it looked great too (and it was one of the easiest birthday cakes I’ve made for her!).
Do you remember Care Bears? I remember them when I was growing up and I was delighted when I found out that they were popular again as my daughter was younger ……… my daughter didn’t really ‘care’ for Care Bears however! One of my friend’s daughters loved them and I’m sure she would’ve loved a Care Bear birthday cake if my friend had thought of it.
You can even get a Care Bear birthday cake pans. I have seen the first cake pan a few times, but I hadn't seen the stand up Care Bear cake pan until I was browsing online one day - I think it looks awesome! How to Make a Kitty Cat Birthday Cake
Of course if you don't want to follow along with her you could just use some of the cat cake toppers that are available.
There are lots of different Car themed birthday cakes available, but the most popular seem to be the Disney Pixar Car cakes or the Cars 2 cakes – Lightning McQueen in particular seems to be a very popular cake request for birthday boys around the globe.
I have seen some people actually fashion cakes to look just like Lightning McQueen and I really take my hat off to them, but for parents who aren’t quite that good at cake decorating I think a Disney Cars decorating set like this one would be perfect –
DecoPac Cars 2 World Grand Prix Decoset
This set features both Lightning McQueen and Mater plastic toppers along with a character crowd scene – all that’s required is the cake (which can be brought already made) and a little icing.
You could just use a plain frosting with these toppers and I’m sure your child would be really happy.
Alternatively you could use a black and white grid pattern on the cake using fondant for a real racing car feel.
The third option is to try and replicate the design you see featured on this cake.
Dora the Explorer is a very popular birthday cake for young girls and with the introduction of her cousin Diego lots of boys can also join in the exploration fun. There's lots of ways of making a Dora and Diego birthday cake, but I'm just going to show you a fun cake decorating set for now -

Just add some green food dye to some fondant to cover the cake then put a drop of the same green food dye in a small bowl with shredded coconut and toss it around. Adding the coconut on top of the fondant icing and pressing it down gives a great illusion of grass that is really easy to achieve - I did this for my daughter's football inspired cake and it looked fantastic!

It seems simple, but I brought one online for a One Direction cake I made my daughter and it was a different size to previous ones I'd used (which I would have known if I'd read the description) and so it was too big for the cake. I fixed it up, but that's a heartache you don't need with a birthday to organize!
